Bieszczady - general information
Bieszczady are part of the Carpathian Mountains on a border with Ukraine with their highest peak called Tarnica ( 1346m). In 1991 the UNESCO East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve was created that encapsulates a large part of the area and continues into Slovakia and Ukraine. It comprises the Bieszczady National Park (Poland), Poloniny National Park (Slovakia) + Uzhansky National Nature Park (Ukraine).
The amazing Bieszczady National Park/ Forest covers 80% of the remotely located area, once called the "Polish Wild East." The park protects a part of Europe's largest primeval and natural beech forest complex. The largest mountain national park in Poland is the only park which protects all of Poland's large mammals and predators, including the Brown Bear, Wolf, Lynx, European Bison, Red Deer, Wildcat, with the Golden Eagle and Eagle Owl among numerous birds of prey. Bieszczady National Park was established in 1973 with an area of 59,55 sq. km. It only protected only a few patches of the most valuable areas - fragments of mountain meadows and surrounding forest. The park was then enlarged four times in 1989, 1991, 1996, and 1999. The Bieszczady Mountains are the most important refuge of brown bear in Poland with a population of approxiamtely 50 animals.
